There’s an air of desperation I sense. It smells a bit like Covid-19, but there’s a difference. There’s no one big bad thing that we collectively can hook onto. No. There are just lots and lots of things. Everywhere you turn, something’s crashing.
On one end, it’s the weather. After we cried during the extended dry periods, Johannesburg has had more rain than I can ever remember, and it’s causing havoc with our poorly maintained infrastructure. Potholes are now swimming pools, and electricity circuits are going crazy. I don’t focus on current affairs, but if I caught a headline from Eskom saying that the coal is wet, I’d believe them.
The chaos of change
Yes, load shedding has returned. Cyril is once again surprised. But this time it’s not the load shedding; it’s the state of Gauteng. He’s going to be embarrassed when he entertains his peers at that patriarchal ball-swinging contest in November. Oh, shame. I haven’t even touched on the conflicts around the globe, and the craziness in Uncle Sam’s country. And we’re in a 9-year (Google numerology, if you don’t know).
We live on a planet with a current population of around 8 billion. That’s a lot of people living in lots of different territories and under varying conditions. In its 2024 Poverty, Prosperity, and Planet report, the World Bank said the setbacks of recent years meant the goal set by the United Nations of ending extreme poverty by 2030 was already impossible to hit. It’s depressing.
So, the sense of anxiety and hysteria is perfectly understandable. The good news is that there’s an alternative. One that I prefer to subscribe to.
Turn inward
We need to redirect our attention inward. This means coming home to the sacred cybernetic system that is our mind and body. When we allow ourselves to be overly influenced by the external chaos of the world without tending to our inner sanctuary, we drain our energy reserves and become susceptible to the lower vibrations of fear, anxiety, and depression. That downward spiral can feel debilitating.
But there’s a way out. The exit door is through our thoughts. We think automatically millions of times a day. Some of us are caught in negative cycles without even realising it. The quality of our lives is directly linked to the quality of our thoughts. Change your thoughts, change your life.
Action speaks louder than words
We’ve all heard that, right? But do we all know how to do it?
Here’s a simple exercise: write down some of your big emotions over a day or even a week – both positive and negative – to see if a pattern emerges. Journaling is a powerful tool. It slows down the mind and offers a fresh perspective. Things look different in black and white.
If you’re not happy with what you see on that piece of paper, dear heart, let’s chat. It’s 15 minutes, on me.
